DOB NOW Filing Help: Build, Inspections and Filing Status
DOB NOW is how New York City takes job filings, permits and inspection requests. You do not have to learn the portal to get a permit.

What you can file in DOB NOW: Build
We work in DOB NOW: Build for job filings, permits and letters of completion. That includes Alt-1, Alt-2 and Alt-3 alteration filings and new-building filings, plumbing permits, Limited Alteration Applications (LAA), mechanical, electrical and other work types the portal accepts for your job. In DOB NOW: Build, an Alt-1 is filed as an Alteration-CO and Alt-2 and Alt-3 work as an Alteration; see Alt-1 vs Alt-2 vs Alt-3. Certificate of occupancy requests are also made in DOB NOW: Build, for both BIS and DOB NOW jobs.
How to check DOB NOW filing status
Jobs, permits and certificates filed in DOB NOW can be looked up by address or job number on the DOB NOW public portal. Older jobs are in DOB's Buildings Information System (BIS). When we file for you, we track the status and tell you when the permit is ready.
Clearing objections
When a plan examiner raises objections, the filing stalls until they are answered. As a Class 2 filing representative, we can attend plan examiner appointments with your architect or engineer to resolve them.
DOB NOW: Inspections
Inspection requests and their status go through DOB NOW: Inspections. We request the inspections and follow them through to sign-off.
DOB NOW: Safety
Some compliance filings go through DOB NOW: Safety, including Local Law 152 gas piping certifications, Local Law 97 fees and extensions, and certificates of correction for ECB violations.
When the job is done
The job closes with a certificate of occupancy or a letter of completion. Open violations hold that up, so see violation removal if the property has any.
